Aromatherapy - Geranium Essential Oil

The Essential Oil of Geranium is extracted through steam distillation of stem and leaves of Geranium plant,

Geranium Essential Oil has a sweet, floral fragrance that calms and relaxes the body and mind. It has been used back to the times of the Egyptians for promoting beautiful, radiant skin amongst other things.

Did you know that the untrained nose usually identifies Geranium Essential Oil for Rose Essential Oil?

The balancing effect that geranium oil has on our emotions is often utilized in aromatherapy. Though geranium is distilled from leaves, its aroma and effects are comparable to such floral oils as rose and lavender. Most people are drawn to floral aromas because their pleasant scents can be uplifting and gently inspiring -- or evoke a sense of calm and tranquility.

Geranium Essential is also an anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, antibacterial, antifungal, antispasmodic, antiseptic, astringent, antidepressant, sedative, homeostatic (stops bleeding), diuretic, liver and pancreas stimulant, detoxification, dilates bile ducts for liver detoxification, insect repellent.

Geranium oil can help diminish fears of abandonment, love and commitment. It asks that one be more accepting and thus more loving of self. So this is a wonderful oil for diffusers, candles, a body lotion(blended oil)

It is documented to treat fungal ear infections in animals. For dogs, it can be used to deter ticks and flies.

Note about Animal Use: Certain oils can be very toxic to cats. Pine and citrus products and oils in particular that are not of therapeutic grade. Please consult your vet if you are not sure about applying any essential oil to your pet.

Because of the extraction process this is one of the more expensive essential oils.

Aromatherapy: Sandalwood Essential Oil

Sandalwood oil is perhaps best known in the west as a sweet, warm, rich and woody essential oil used as is for a body fragrance, and as an ingredient in fragrant products such as incense, perfumes, aftershaves and other cosmetics. But the story of sandalwood, the divine essence, goes much further. Sandalwood has been a part of the religious and spiritual traditions of India since prehistory and has been effectively used in traditional medicine for thousands of years.

A particular issue Sandalwood oil is in high demand today and the resource is dwindling. This has lead to several unfavorable results: 1) sandalwood oil is one of the most-often adulterated essential oils; 2) the cost of sandalwood oil is rising dramatically (about 25% per year); 3) due to the value of sandalwood oil, the trees are being illegally cut, leading to the waste of this precious resource as trees that are too young are cut, or trees are cut but the roots are left to rot (the roots are the most valuable part of the tree from which to extract the oil). Additionally, this illegal poaching has lead to several murders of forestry officials and other crimes indicative of the black market; 4) the resource is becoming scarce. The current production of sandalwood trees is not enough to meet the demand of consumers.

Sandalwood oil, a classic evergreen natural essential oil used in aromatherapy, has numerous health benefits:

Traditionally a hydration agent for skin, cure for both acne and dry skin
    Anti-inflammatory
A relaxing aid for tension relief
In treatment of chronic bronchitis by helping mucous membranes in the chest wall
Supports the nervous system and circulation

While it does not have therapeutic value, there are wonderful Sandalwood Fragrance Oils. Like using Palm Wax, I choose to not purchase Sandalwood Essential Oil because I do not want to support the illegal clearing of Palm in Indonesia and will not support the illegal harvesting of sandalwood trees.

Aromatherapy - Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot is a citrus fruit whose rind is used for extracting the Bergamot Oil.  Bergamot Oil has a Fresh, orange/lemon/citrusy, slightly floral sweet woodsy smell.

Anti Biotic & Disinfectant: Certain components of the essential oil of Bergamot are anti biotic and disinfectant in nature. They inhibit growth of germs, virus and fungi. They also effectively prohibit infections, such as those of skin. If regularly used with bathing water or in soaps (this is already used extensively in skin-care soaps), the skin and hair remains protected from infections and become shiny.

Cicatrisant: This property of Bergamot oil is the reason behind its extensive use in cosmetics, skin-care products such as beauty soaps, creams, lotions etc. Cicatrisant is a property or an agent which helps the scar and other marks on the skin to disappear. It also makes the distribution of pigments and melanin even and uniform, resulting in the fading away of marks.

Candle Aromatherapy

The components of Bergamot Oil, like Alpha Pinene and Limonene, are anti depressant and stimulant in nature. They give a feeling of freshness, joy and energy in cases of sadness and depression by improving circulation.

Relaxant & Sedative: Bergamot oil is very good relaxants too. They soothe nerves and reduce nervous tension, anxiety, stress etc. and hence help cure ailments associated with stress such as sleeplessness, high blood pressure etc.

If you have a hard time sleeping, a tart burner with Bergamot, Neroli or Petitgrain will help you get a good night sleep. It is a natural rest, nothing that you get from a sleep aid.

Aromatherapy - Lavender Essential Oil

History of Lavender Oil

Lavender originated in the Mediterranean and still grows wild on hills and mountains across southern Europe. The word lavender comes from the Latin word "lavare" which means to wash. Lavender has been used for thousands of years for many different reasons but primarily it was used as soap and perfume. Lavender was also thought to ward off the evil eye, protect against the plague and attract love.
Lavender remains a popular fragrant due to its fresh, clean scent. It's used in many products such as soaps, detergents, shampoo, perfume and candles. Pure essential lavender oil is the best to use mainly because it has no added chemicals. There are many health benefits and you will actually save money using lavender oil than if you buy commercial products.

How do Essential Oils Work?

They can be used in numerous ways to treat skin complaints and conditions, once absorbed into the bloodstream they can be beneficial to the circulatory system and inhalation is an effective way to treat nose, throat and lung ailments and they may be applied externally for stomach and digestive complaints.

Immune System:  Virtually all essential oils have bacterialcidal properties, and by promoting the production of white blood cells, they can help prevent and treat infections illness.

Nervous System:  Some oils are known to have a balancing or normalizing effect on the systems of the body.  Some are relaxing, uplifting, or reviving.  Some work more on an emotional level as others on a physiological level.

The Mind:  Essential oils have been used throughout history for their power to influence the emotions and state of mind

Uses For Lavender Oil

There are so many ways to use lavender oil. Here's a list of things that lavender oil can do for you.
Controls acne, leading to clearer skin
May lessen wrinkles and prevent future wrinkles
Can control Eczema
Lessen apperance of bruises
Help to ease arthritis
Cures cold sores
Cures ear infections
Cures bug bites / bee stings
Eases muscle aches
Relieves depression and anxiety
Great for de-stressing and relaxation
Cures headaches
Cures insomnia

Be Careful when buying Aromatherapy Candles or Aromatherapy "labeled" Products.
There's no law or guidelines on the use of the term "aromatherapy" so any manufacturer, even those that include synthetic ingredients in their candles, can slap the word "aromatherapy" onto their label.  You may see "Aromatherapy" in local retail stores.. most likely the products are scented with synthetic fragrances, contain chemicals.

Holistic aromatherapy focuses and emphasizes the use of all natural ingredients whenever possible. Most candles are not all natural, even if they are marketed with the word aromatherapy. Burn candles made with synthetic ingredients (or even natural ingredients with toxic compounds), and despite how pleasantly fragrant the air is that you breathe, you will still inhale toxins.

Benefits of a Lavender Aromatherapy Candle

On the "Top 10 Essential Oil" Lavender is Number 1.

Lavender essential oil has a calming scent which makes it an excellent tonic for the nerves. Therefore, it helps in treating migraines, headaches, anxiety, depression, nervous tension and emotional stress. The refreshing aroma removes nervous exhaustion and restlessness and increases mental activity. I offer it as a 8 oz Mason Jar(30 hour) burn for 1 hour before you go to bed, Votive Candles that burn for 12 hours, Tarts and Mini Melts(a safe alternative for burning all night)   http://www.aesthetic-candles.com/

Aromachology  Scent Category

This category includes fragrances such as ylang ylang, mint, ginger, green tea and eucalyptus, which are often used in day spas and resorts to create a sense of calm and well-being.  Ylang Ylang is believed to decrease anxiety, slow breathing, lower  blood pressure, lift the mood, improve circulation and reduce insomnia. Sandalwood, which also falls into this category, is believed to help regulate one’s mood, treat insomnia and reduce nervous tension.

There is new term, Aromachology , used for  products scented with fragrance oils, that are mostly synthetic.  Aromachology they may influence your feelings and emotions such as relaxation, exhilaration, sensuality, happiness and well-beings but they are fragrance Oils so while pleasing. do not have the therapeutic benefit of an essential oil.

Aromatherapy is this a new term?

there is a a great deal of scientific literature suggests that certain scents can influence your mood, immune system, anxiety and skin health.
The origin and elements of Aromatherapy can be traced back to nearly 3000 years before Christ, when the earlier Egyptians used the elements of Aromatherapy in their daily lives. Documented records show that Egyptians burned incense made from aromatic woods and additional herbs to honor their gods.
Also imperial harems and guest houses used many aromatic oils very profusely to satisfy numerous important guests. Aromatherapy has its roots in the most ancient healing and therapeutic practices. Healing plants are used to cure many ailments and used in many sacred rituals to evoke separate states of consciousness.
Elaborate religious ceremonies were performed in Egyptian temples, where the dead King was mummified and surrounded with exotic necessary oils. Egyptians believed very firmly that essential oils have an unusual preserving property when added with other spices.
Embalming was one of the principal uses of aromatherapy, preserving the fabric of the bodies for thousands of years. The oils and resins used were so powerful, that in the 17th century mummies were sold in Europe and doctors distilled them for use in their medicines.
Aromatherapy truly emerged from the smoky temples of Egypt 6,000 years ago. Egypt was the motherland of medicine, pharmaceutics, cosmetics and perfumery. Trading was flourishing and traders arrived for trade from all over the world by land and sea to deliver flowers, herbs and plants. Priestesses and priests strictly supervised the delicate preparations in the temples and palaces, reading formulas & chanting incantations and hymns, as substances were measured & combined with ultimate precision.
The use of aromatherapy spread from Egypt to Israel, China, India and the Mediterranean. Every culture, from the most backward to the most up to date, developed their own set of practices. Greek physicians and military surgeons were employed by the Romans every where in the empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the science spread to the Arab countries, where medicine men devoted them to the bygone art of alchemy, perfecting the art of distillation and extraction.
For many centuries essential oils were the only remedies for widespread diseases and conditions. During the dreaded Black Plague, very few became ill, who in fact were associated with perfumeries and glove industries where these oils were in profuse use. During the 19th century, with the development of modern science, all forms of herbal medicine disappeared until the 1920s, when French chemist Gatefosse revived the art, giving it the name Aromatherapy.

India was one of the few countries where the custom was never lost, Avurveda being the most ancient medical practice in the world today. Aromatherapy is now used in hospitals, offices, clinics and homes all over the world. Aromatherapy acts as a span between the new and old, most of the industries use these oils for various blends and concoctions, which contribute cure and relief for a number of complications.
