And then, of course, about a week before Christmas, the fresh crisp outdoor smell of the pine of the Christmas tree followed, on Christmas morning, by the tangy citrus aroma from the orange or tangerine hidden in the toe of my stocking.

The rhizome of the tender aromatic herb, which are covered by a tuft of soft light-brown 'rootlets', yields the plant's essential oil. Native to the Hymalayan mountains, the plant grows wild in India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim, at elevations between 11,000 and 17,000 feet.
Spikenard was very precious in ancient times, used only by kings, priests and high initiates in Egyptian, Hebrew, and Hindu civilizations. One of Spikenard's biblical references is that of Mary of Bethany anointing the feet of Jesus with the oil before the last supper: "Then took Mary a pound of ointment of Spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment."

Additionally, this illegal poaching has lead to several murders of forestry officials and other crimes indicative of the black market; the resource is becoming scarce. The current production of sandalwood trees is not enough to meet the demand of consumers. The trees are difficult to propagate and must grow for at least 30 years to become suitable for harvesting.
Sandalwood oil has a long history of use as a traditional medicine. It is part of traditional medical systems such as Chinese medicine and the Indian healing science known as Ayurveda.
It promotes restful sleep and helps to ease an anxious mind. It's considered an aid in meditation and prayer--a common practice is placing a drop of sandalwood oil on the third eye. It's grounding in times of emotional distraction and helps bring peace and acceptance in times of loss.
If you can find pure Sandalwood essential oil, expect to pay about $100 for an ounce of it. Amyris Essential has similar properties to Sandalwood, and can be purchased for about $10, and you would not be supporting the black market.
