The Chinese scholar Confucius ate fresh ginger with every meal. Since it was one of the earliest herbs transported in the spice trade, it is now difficult to determine if ginger originated in India or China. One ancient Indian trading city was named Shunthi, the Sanskrit name for ginger. Ginger has many applications in aromatherapy.
From 200 B.C.E. and continuing for a thousand years, Arab traders monopolized the ginger trade, carrying the root in sealed earthenware jars on camel caravans through Asia Minor or on boats sailing through the Arabian Sea to Egypt. Ginger was also used in ancient Greece, Rome, and even Britain before the Norman conquest. Spanish conquistadors introduced ginger to the West Indies. In the Philippines, ginger is used to fish with as it is believed to attract fish. It is also thought to drive out the evil spirits that cause disease. In Melanesia, men used it to win the affection of women; Arabs consider it an aphrodisiac that greatly increases energy.
Could St. Hildegarde of Bingen have known this in the twelfth century when she recommended its use for stimulating the vigor of older men married to young women? Or perhaps she was aware that its name comes from the same root as generate and beget, meaning to procreate? Because of such qualities, the word ginger has developed an informal meaning of liveliness and vigor.

Elemi (Canarium luzonicum) has a spicy, incense-like scent that is soft
and somewhat balsamic. A member of the same botanical family as
frankincense and myrrh, it has been used traditionally in Europe for the
skin.
The gum, or resin, was often used in old-fashioned ointments and salves for the skin, and also for respiratory conditions.
The name 'elemi' comes from an arabic phrase meaning 'above and below', reminding us that the sacred resin in the tree supports our well-being on both the spiritual and the physical planes.
When the lovely pale yellow leaves of the Elemi begin to sprout, the tree produces an exotic honey-like aromatic oleo-resin. The botanical resin will solidify on contact with the air and the tree stops producing it when the last leaf falls. Reminiscent of Frankincense and Myrrh, the steam distilled Elemi essential oil is light yellow color with a pleasant rich aroma with that hints of balsam, pine, and lemon.
Elemi helps speed the healing process and brings a natural vibrancy to skin that has been damaged by the sun, scarring, or the natural aging process.
Elemi can be beneficial for various respiratory complaints including chest infections. catarrh, and sinusitis. to be as an insect repellant and may also help pets get rid of fleas. Most of us are used to the Citronella Candles that are found in most stores. Those are scented with a fragrance oil.
There are two distinct types of citronella grass, which are sometimes labeled as different species: Cymbopogon nardus, known as lenabatu or Ceylon type citronella, and C. winterianus known as maha pengiri or Java type citronella. The Ceylon type is the original cultivated variety. It grows on the island of Sri Lanka and may have arisen as a distinct form of yet another type of wild grass called C. confertiflorus. The Java type, C. winterianus may have arisen as a distinct form of the Ceylon type, C. nardus.
Also known to clear the mind, may be useful for headaches and migraines. Its deodorant and stimulating properties always refresh sweaty tired feet. Blends well with citrus oils, cedarwood, eucalyptus, peppermint, and eucalyptus.
Using Citronella at Home
Because of its association with insect repellency, citronella is usually overlooked as an aromatherapy oil. That's a shame because citronella possesses warming and activating qualities on both the physical and mental levels.
Combining citronella with lemon will support its clarifying benefit while the addition of geranium or rose will make it more moderate and balancing.
This is one of the lesser expensive essential oils, you should be able to find it for less than $10 for an ounce.
